Moms! What baby gear is *actually* useful?

9

I want to be prepared but to avoid needless spending and gadgetry. When it comes to baby gear–everything from strollers to peepee teepees:

What is the one item you can’t live without?

What is the one item you have that you never use?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts/help!

Beside all the essentials I would have to say they swing is something we couldn’t live without, our little girl loved it for the first few months and now she loves to play with all the toys that are on the swings tray. They one thing I bought that I didn’t use was a baby back pack thing. Where you can carry the baby in front or back.

go for the basics – pack n play (newborns can sleep there for a few months), swing, bouncy, excersaucer, baby bjorn or similar, crib wedge (i like that – fits under the sheets so the baby can sleep on an incline), humidifier

skip the bottle warmers, diaper wipe warmers, sleep positioner, all that junk.

    LOVE
    Patience
    Diapers (cloth or disposable)
    Wipes
Breast milk (via nipple or pump) or formula, bottles.
    Stroller
    Car Seat
Tub, towels, Johnson baby body wash
Support – whether family, friend, etc.
    The doctor/nurse on speed dial
A place for the babe to sleep
    Digital thermometer (forehead or underarm)
Liquid Ibruprofen (name brand or generic)
Teething rings or frozen ice cubes
    Diaper bag
    Clothes (lots of ‘em!)
    Bibs
    Pedialyte
Anything that makes your life easier (voice mail, children’s dvd’s for 22 minutes of UNINTERUPTED, blissful shower time – yes, I timed it!)

Seriously, these are the basics. You’ll know what else YOU NEED to survive! :)

swing, highchair: my son out grew his swing he is 7months now, but it was very useful. His high chair i use it all the time when im in the kitchen i place him in and do what i have to do while he has a snack or plays with something.

Hmm never really used his bottle warmer, i used a thermos!

the one item I couldnt live with out was my baby sling. Both of my kids were colicy and I found wearing them close to my heart seemed to sooth them when nothing else did. Another item was my cloth diapers because there are so many things you can do with them besides cover a naked heiney, like a light weight nursing drape or a spit cloth or a snuggle for a toddler.Plus once you are done with baby stage they make good cleaning cloths

The things I never used were
    the baby bathtub
    the ginormus stroller

I loved my car seat / stroller combo. It was so easy to use and the way they click in and attach made them feel very safe.

Things I couldnt live without, Stroller, car seat, wipes, diapers, clothes, I would stay away from newborn unless your baby is pretty tiny because dosnt take long at all for them to grow out of it. I would go with 0-3 months. Lots of bottles yes they do dissiaper.

Things I could live withouth, Baby monitor(unless babys room is so far away that you cant hear the child through the walls) diaper bag(I found they just arnt big enough I carry around a back pack) wipe warmer, bottle warmer, diaper genie( I hate mine its just easier to use the trash can) Baby tub( I found just bying a loung seat from walmart in the baby section was easier and then just use the regular tub saves time and money it only cost $5)

I would have been lost without my sling. Easy to nurse in, even in public, and great for at home on those fussy days.
