What baby gear do I need?

10

What are the must-haves that I will need as a new mom for my first baby? Crib, car seat, etc.? What are some things I shouldn’t waste my money on?

You will need a car seat, crib/bassinett/Moses basket,
    changing table and stroller…

diaper bag, diapers, wipes, baby clothes, baby socks, bibs, recieving blankets, and baby laundry detergent

nursing bras, nursing shirts, breastpump and bottles
    or
    formula and bottles

Tylenol, Motrin, teething medicine, Midol and thermometer

grocery cart seat cover, hand sanitizer, teething rings and rattles

a crib mobile (use it for the changing table NOT the crib)
or both – but it is really great at the changing table

Do not waste your money on a Diaper Genie (I own three), bouncy seat (I have one on both floors). A playpen (I have one on both floors)The reason I am telling you I own them is so you know that I know they are truly a waste of money.
Please don’t waste your money on pacifiers,a wipes warmer, or a bottle warmer either.

I did home daycare for three years. I am still licensed but I have a part time job outside of the home and no daycare kids right now. The items that I have more than one of are good for a daycare but not must-haves for a first time mom.

    *good sturdy changing table
*large sturdy diaper bag that won’t embarrass your hubby, no cutesy-poo stuff
*extra car seat base if you have two cars
*Playtex bottles with liners and extra nipples
*one of the dishwasher baskets for bottle nipples and lids (works for sippy cup parts, too)
    *Diaper Genie
*stroller that works with the car seat
    *fast-read digital thermometer, with covers
    *baby gym
*grocery cart cover for when the baby outgrows the infant car seat you can carry around–make sure it’s the kind that also works on restaurant high chairs
    *musical crib mobile
*toy bar to attach to car seat
*plastic colorful links to attach toys to changing table, car seat, high chair, etc.
*tummy medicine, baby Tylenol, diaper rash cream, teething medicine
*Be Kool or similar gel patches for fever
    *large bottles of hand sanitizer
*Absorb-a-mess if you can find it–babies can’t tell you when they’re about to throw up!

    Good luck!

    you will need:
    -crib
-car seat (you can have you dr or hosp. check it out to make sure its safe enough for when you bring the baby home)
-stroller- dont get a pram, that is a huge waste of money. get one that the car seat fits into that can be converted for years of use.
    you need a changing table
-wipe warmer- my cousins used one, im on the fence about this, it makes baby more comfortable, though
-make sure you have plenty of sleepers for baby, as they will be in them most of the time the first few months

if you plan to use a bottle and not breast feed, you still dont need a sterilizer, you can use one tablespoon of bleach to a gallon of warm water, soak 2 minutes, then dry.

Well im definitely not a mom im only 15 but i helped raise three kids so maybe i can help. Don’t waste your money on those little rubber toys for teething because you wont need them till the babies almost one. You could start with diapers, baby formula, pacifiers, bottles, whimsies, wipes, rash cream (just in case), and all the bathing essentials like baby shampoo and baby lotion. The more expensive things that might help are some things like a baby rocker and one of those Rollie play chairs with the toys attached……..Oh and don’t bother on hair things or clips till the child’s about 2-3 years old……..hope ive been of some help…….

I don’t have kids, but my sister-in-law has 4 and she suggests forgoing the diaper genie. She says all it does is smell and doesn’t mask anything. She said just take the diaper out to the trash and save they money.

    Good luck!

    Well must haves:

    Crib
    Pack n Play (play yard)
    Stroller/carseat
High chair——> Dont waste your money in a top of the line big fancy high chair, it occupies space and most are really hard to clean. Get a portable chair from Fisher price http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2861762

It hooks onto any chair in your house, it has a tray for your baby to eat at, and when your baby is older it serves as a booster seat without the tray. It’s can also fold flat! for those trips to the restaurant or grandma’s house =)

Exersaucer my kids loved theirs and it was a great way to keep them entertained while I washed dishes etc

bouncy chair I would say is a must have for young infants-when they’re awake a good place to put them in

    That as for gear…

Then I would strongly recommend getting a sleep positioner

    http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2341851
For those first few months when your baby is newly born and having a hard time sleeping, a sleep positioner will help him feel snugglier-and more comfortable

    Blankets, cotton ones for swaddling
    Burp cloths
Of course clothes-a few newborn, many 0-3 mos and lots 3-6! babies tend to grow a lot in the first few months
    A change table
Pacifiers— yes I encourage you to use them, I didnt with my son and now he sucks his thumb!! :( well since then …
    what else …
    toys-rattles
    mobile

Another thing that no need to buy is the swing… some kids love it and some hate it-either way they only use it for a few months it’s very bulky. Unless of course it’s a gift :D then it’s fine..

Jolly Jumpers/jumperoos are nice… I had a jolly jumper that you can attach to the wall… so it takes up less space than a jumperoo.. I dont have a big house so that’s why I talk about space all the time! LOL

A play mat.. to place your baby for tummy time or to play when older…

Aveeno Baby Lotion you’ll need it..

And I think that’s about it… those are the basics…

Good luck on your pregnancy!! :)

With my first, I went all out. I wasted a lot of money…Had to have a crib; Which he never slept in. I would recommend a bassinet. You can take it into any room…Then resell it & buy whatever you decide at that point.
Basics: diapers, wipes, baby wash, cloths, bath tub, towels, sleepers & onesies, socks, receiving blankets, cuddling blankets, diaper bag, change pad, I recommend a change table, vaseline, diaper rash cream, gripe water, car seat (of course).
I would also recommend a swing! And/ or a bouncy seat.
No need to buy things like a jumper, highchair, etc. Baby can’t use that until they are older. Hope this helped:)

  10. tonnieRN says:

u don’t need all this, but i found all of these very helpful for making life easier..

well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don’t need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it…the things i liked;found most useful, etc……

    .i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don’t like them, there is NO smell in my dd ‘s room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves….i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available…
monitor–i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference….it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don’t fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
    primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd’s bottom; and she doesn’t freak out when we are out and they aren’t warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper…desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it….infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period…brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes…wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom…
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby’s bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash….and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
    bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy–we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a ‘pocket’ up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there…
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down…very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support…not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys–she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
    clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don’t get lost in the wash…
something to put baby toys in
    extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan….
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it’s where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now…LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don’t have to haul the bigger one

    if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later…i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles–really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it’s easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off…and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby’s milk; they will leak if you don’t put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking…:O)
bottle and nip brushes–i really like the ones by munchking that don’t have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles….
drying racks–again, i really like munchkins.
