Our Little Kitty gets a new dog toy

25

This is our African serval whacking the new toy to make sure it is dead first. Servals use their arms like clubs to kill their prey. This serval has whacked me across the head before, and it came so fast and hard, i thought i was getting mugged. This cat was about 25 lbs, and 22″ high when this video was made. The serval has also been known as “The poor man’s Cheetah” due to the low price tag of getting one. Now it is all but impossible to get a cheetah, but servals are still available, however not so cheap as they once were. Servals are one of the few “wild” species that are plentiful in wild, and are far from being on the endangered list. There are many servals kept in private homes, zoos, preserves, and feline collections, in addition to the plenty still in their natural habitat. They pose no threat to humans if they escape, as they will always try to avoid human contact with strangers. Their natural prey are birds, rodents, rabbits, insects, and the like.

You’re welcome. :) I’m not one for putting others down. I think just the same. You take care as well.

Note: Thank you for the correction.

  11. jcisbell says:

Well, thank you for not “shutting me down”. I think we are having a valuable discussion here.

  12. jcisbell says:

You sound so nice. You can just tell by someone’s writing style. To you alone I will say, yes of course everyone gets to make their own decision. I’m just trying to cause the effect that people stop and think before they act.
Also, I don’t know what you mean by “subjective”. I don’t think that word means what you think it means :) Do you mean “judgmental”? I am being that. Take care.

  13. EmoraChan13 says:

Feeling sad about never being able to get one and bashing someone for it is futile. I understand you feel for these animals, but what about others? Cats aren’t the only animals in shelters. Yes, they are beautiful creatures. But you must think about other animals if you really love them.

  14. EmoraChan13 says:

This isn’t a new breed. In fact, a lot of larger cats aren’t new breeds. The thing about adopting strays is they find it difficult to adapt to new homes. My Aunt has had many and I’ve had a few myself. In fact, almost all of our cats have been either strays or gifts from a family friend. I’m not saying I don’t love cats, but I am saying that people get to make they’re own choices. Also, don’t be so subjective… you’re not the only person who admires these animals.

  15. Blackmaildesigns says:

Thanks for your civil manner. Lots of folks here want to shoot the messenger. I don’t care what kind of cat someone gets as long as they don’t participate in creating extra cats to get it – until all the strays have homes. Then we can all go crazy! Not really, but YKWIM.

  16. GT4604 says:

@jcisbell ?? This isn’t a new breed. This is the original pet cat in human history. I know what you’re saying, the stray cat situation and the overflowing shelters makes me extremely sad, but to say that someone should or shouldn’t get a kind of cat because of that is kind of irrelevant I think.

  17. jcisbell says:

Do you love cats? Cats love cats too. And when they do, they make MORE – and there aren’t enough homes for them. So they end up being destroyed. I love these exotic breeds but I feel so sad because I will probably never get one. How can I give my space to an expensive breed when I can rescue a shelter cat? It’s a matter of priority. How can anyone justify bringing new breeds into the world until we have the stray population under control?

  18. EmoraChan13 says:

Why did you have to bring that up? It is completely unnecessary.

  19. pilgrim4truth says:

If you can afford to keep you pet, no matter what it is fancy or normal, then you will be one of the priviledged.
The debate over pedigreed over rescue animals is about to become a moot subject, as the crisis deepens.

  20. pilgrim4truth says:

I would normally shut down jcisbell from this line of reason, but i won’t this time because truly the USA and the world is in a crisis that has only begun, and will get much worse yet. Because of the depression that will get much worse yet, and worldwide, people can no longer afford to feed their pets. This is going be very devastating to cats & dogs, and many millions of them are heading for suffering and death, numbers that have never been seen before.

  21. Blackmaildesigns says:

It makes me laugh how many people give you – an obvious cat lover – the thumbs down. I guess they prefer living in a fantasy world. Well wake up!! If you “love cats” you must make the decisions that help them. Spay and neuter!!!!! Keep them indoors!!!! Adopt don’t buy!!!!!!!

jcisbell is right, that is a beautiful cat!!!!!!!!!!

  22. jcisbell says:

Since you asked I’ll say “No, it sounds like you are a very good person”. It’s just important that people like you and I let others know how important it is to try to reduce the number of unwanted pets. We have shelter cats and a main coon. So who am I to judge? The fact remains for others to consider that there are only so many homes for cats. And THERE ARE more cats than homes. So? When you (or I) get a “fancy cat” instead of an “alley cat” some kitty in a shelter gets the death sentence.

  23. Henrika16 says:

I have gotten all 4 of my current cats from the spca, does it then make me a bad person for wanting a serval or a pedigree cat? your facts make no sense. Cats from breeders generally are not sold unless they are spayed and neutered. Shelter cats are from irresponsible owners that cant be bothered to get their cats fixed. Its not my fault that other people are being cruel, but don’t blame people who have done nothing wrong in going to a respectable breeder.

  24. MossclawThunderClan says:

its an african serval (a wild cat)

  25. bilaremix says:

    is that a cheater?!?!?
