I have an old dog whose never had a dog bed. I just bought one. How do I get her to sleep on it?

I put the bed in the spot where she usually lies down, she just moves to another spot.

    You don’t
Generally they get used to them as pups
If its an older dog “5+ years”
It;s likley to stick to its old ways

you can try to have him walk over to it then get him on with treats then have him lie down until he’s comfortable

well when shen gets used to it and feels confortablw that maybe she will lay on it.
PS put some dog treats on the bed andsay come and well u get the point.)

Whenever you walk by it with your dog tell him or her that it is its bed. Eventually it will get used to it. Praise your dog when it lays on it also.

Maybe try putting some old toys in it or a familliar scent like an old sweater or collar. Sometimes its hard for dogs to adjust to little things like that and they just need a little push to get them going.

Put a towel or blanket that has your scent on the dog bed, that should help.

Place any toys she has had in it as well as any other blankets that she may have slept on at anytime. This will allow for her to pick up her scent. Also placing her on it or sliding it under her while she sleeps may help as well.

spray some of your perfume or laundry detergent on the spot. dogs always like to smell their owners. you can also try laying on it with her and saying good girl. shell get used to it. also could put treats on it, or give her one when she lies on it

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks!! You might have something thats the dogs, and put in on the dog bed.

LOL, she’s probably wondering what the hell is this sh*t doing in my sleeping spot!

my sister got a dog and if you place them in the bed theyll go to sleep in there if u dont bother them alot.

I used to put toys in the bed and he’ll play with them and start getting used to the little bed

    it’ll work

Try putting some of her toys in it. Or take a blanket or towel, rub it all over her, then place it in the bed. Or maybe one of your old shirts or towel that has your sent on it. Dogs love lying on things that have their owners sent on it. Good luck

She will learn this is comfortable place to sleep. She just does not understand the purpose. I would play, lay down with her, feed her etc to give her the idea that this bed is hers.

I have never seen a dog who does not appreciate a soft bed. She will get it in time. I have two elderly dogs. Both never had a bed. One had never even slept inside. But they both love their beds now.

Lay on it with the dog. It may take some time, but it will get use to it.

  17. Brymom02 says:

eh, that might be hard. A dogs sleeping area is like its bedroom. If its been sleeping in that area for a long time, it might be pretty hard to get her to change areas. Dogs are very particular about where they sleep. My dog does the same thing. Actually, I have 2 dogs. Neither of them sleep on the dog bed I have for them. Maybe try playing with the dog on it. Lay down by her and rub her tummy for awhile. Maybe after awhile she’ll get used to it.

Get a heating pad and place a small rather thin blanket over it. Put the setting on low and wait for the bed to warm up a bit.
Bring the dog over and sit next to it for awhile. Older dogs often suffer from stiff joints and arthritis and this warmth makes them feel good. Eventually you can remove the heating pad and the dog will still enjoy the bed…..Good Luck
