What are the absolute must haves in the first 6 weeks of a newborn’s life?

8

I know breast milk & diapers are a given.
But I’m talking Baby gear…
I go to the store to look at what I might need, But I keep thinking, “how much can a newborn reeeally NEED?”.

fo the first 6 weeks all you really need are:
    singlets
    socks
    body suits
    mittens
    bonnets
    baby wraps
    bed linen
dummy – if you want to use one
    thermometer
    nail clippers
    rash cream -zinc
    wipes
cant really think of anything else
all the best with the little one….enjoy this time is really precious

sleep and play ( the pj’s ) and onesies that’s all I may kid had when he was that little. A snow suit for the cold the weather if needed. Enjoy the fact that the “gear” is simple now…it changes quick…LOL

They do not need that much. The other answers before me pretty much covered it. Just remember that some babies grow like weeds right away so do not buy so many clothes that half of them never get used. Also get some baby wash and a lavender scented lotion can be a God send to calm a fussy baby.

a car seat, a bassinet or moses basket or coside sleeper. A couple blankets, maybe one that is a swaddling one but you can also use regular blankets to swaddle. Of course onesies and I like the gowns better then sleepers for newborns. Lotion to keep the babys skin soft. A boppy might be helpful for when your breast feeding.
    So-
    BreastMilk
    Diapers
    Carseat
    Bed
    Blankets
    Onesies
    Gowns
    Boppy(optional)

I think people tend to overthink how much a baby really needs. As long as you have breasts, the food aspect is covered. Diapers, yes, whether cloth or disposable. You probably need some receiving blankets, onesies, socks, baby wipes, a car seat, patience, and hypoallergenic soap.

    OMG, TWO WORDS

    “DIAPER GENIE”

After that, the things that I used the most were our carseat, our bassinet, our baby wash tub, Balmex, the nasal aspirator the hospital gives you, wipes (lots of those – we love the CVS Soft Cloth ones in scented), Halo Sleep Sacks, a couple of receiving blankets, a binky or two, and seriously, Gerber footie pajamas that zip, not snap (those snaps can be h*ll at 2AM).

    Congrats on your little one!

so the word “need” means something different to everyone. I needed and used everyday from birth the following gear:

    carseat
bouncy chair with vibration…make sure it bounces AND vibrates
    onesies
nail file-I didn’t cut my babies nails, just filed them
    bathtub
    bath toiletries
stroller or baby bjorn or both
Butt Paste (diaper rash cream) I used it as barrier
    Cornstarch Baby Powder

All of the suggestions are great. The only thing that I would add is the kimono style t-shirts (example: http://store.babycenter.com/product/clothing_maternity/uni_0_12_months/tops_onesies_unisex012/6432?intcmp=&stage=) which are great when you’re afraid to put anything over your newborn’s head. They go great with a diaper and a swaddle. With these there’s no need for gowns or onesies.

    And for YOU…

    good nursing bra
    lanolin
    nursing pads
    sanitary pads

I recommend Motherhood for all nursing related items
