I bought my dog his own bed but he won’t sleep in it. How do I train him to sleep in it and not in mine?
The dog is used to sleeping in our (my bf and I) bed. I do not like sleeping with the dog it is ruining our relationship. I bought the dog a nice, expensive bed from fosters and smith and now he refuses to sleep in it and insists on sleeping on the furniture and our bed! Help!
Put him on the bed – give treat – repeat over and over until he gets the clue…
when you go to sleep, close the door so your dog would get on the bed. Leave him in a room which has a lot of food, water, and treats
You have to be consistent, which means a lot of staying up. Put the dog in its bed and praise it. When it goes to the coach or your bed, dont say anthing just simply take the dog back to its bed and praise it again. Keep doing this eventually he will realize what is expected of him.
refuse to let the dog on your furniture.. if he gets on it, tell him down, or off. and give him a slight nuge to get off.
let him know you are the one in charge of your home and that he doesnt have a say in wether he is on your furniture or not. he is a dog. not a human.
once he notices he cant get on, hell get the clue,and go on his bed. he willl learn to like it
put him in the washroom for a couple nights with the bed an then he’ll start getting used to it an there yeah go he’ll grow on it….;)
Vetenarians recommend for the first year of having a dog as your pet, the dog should sleep on it’s own bed. Find a medium-sized room (a laundry room, coat room, etc.) and place the bed in there. When it’s the dog’s bedtime, lead him into the room and shut the door. This sounds cruel, but the dog will eventually get used to sleeping on the bed and in the room. If your dog whines and barks for you to open the door, only give in if it’s extreme (he might have to go to the bathroom.) Make sure to open the door relatively early the next morning, and let your dog outside, because chances are he will have to go to the bathroom. The first few nights we had trouble with this tactic but our dog now is used to the routine and walks willingly into the room to his bed.
This is exactly why I never let my dog in my bed.
I love him dearly, and have caved in on allowing him on the sofa, but my bed is MY bed.
Anyway, I would approach it this way:
Correct and remove him when he gets on your bed.
Reward and praise him when he is on HIS bed.
I assume his bed is next to yours?
This will take alot of time, patience and consistency as you are basically having to retrain him.
Another option is to get a training device that uses a sensor that you would put on your bed and a collar that will give him a little “zap” if he gets to close to the sensor. (I have felt the “shock” myself and it’s no worse than the feeling of a battery on your tongue). It works like the collar used with invisible fencing. I had to resort to this option when my dog kept jumping on the sofa to bark out the window, not only destroying the sofa and curtains, but putting himself in danger at the window. He learned within 1 day his range/how close he can get to the sofa now. (The collar beeps a few times as a warning when he gets in range of the sensor)

Lol i have the same issue with my bf and his dog… I can’t stand teh dog in the bed. Dog has a bed in the bedroom, but he too sleeps on the furniture instead. He’ll lay on his bed sometimes, but he’ll usually migrate to the sofa.
Be persistent with keeping him off the bed. If he’s allowed on sometimes, you can’t punish him for getting on it! All you can do is teach him an “off” command, that is just a command like any other, not a punishment.
If you want to keep him off the bed 100% of the time for ever, then you can use “no” and make the dog get off the bed. be persistent. keep the door closed when you’re not there to keep him off the bed when you’re not there to correct.
If he’s comfortable on the sofa, it’s probably okay he sleeps there no?
Tel Him to get Down if he trays to get up on your bed point to his new bed as you say it if all fales then shut him in a empty room e.g. bathroom with the bed he will soon start getting used to it then slowly introduce him sleeping in it in your room (if you pick the bath room then do not forge to

2.put down food
3put toilet lid down
4. take towns out
5.put harmful stuff in a safe place !)
I gave up buying dog and cat beds years ago. They never seem to want to sleep where you wish them to. Our dog liked the couch. We eventually put up a gate to keep him out of the living area. The gate is long gone now. He knows now that he can only enter the living area and bedrooms when invited to do so. And the beds and the furniture are strictly off limits. He has now resigned himself to sleeping at the bottom of the stairs. It’s just a matter of some simple training and a lot of patience.
yes that is what happens when the dog thinks he is allowed anywhere. if he was never initially corrected of course he’ll keep doing it. You’ll just have to be consistent about either making him get off the bed when he hops up up putting him on the floor. its better to encourage the dog off the bed then to pick up and set down because if they do it on their own then it kinda sticks more than being carried to the place. just do it everytime, sure it might take a while, but if you want it to work you have to do it everytime. get a piece of your clothing or something and put it with the dog to sleep with. good luck.
