Scared.. again

I love horror movies but few keep me awake at night as the first scary movie that left me staying up all night worrying what was lurking under my bed.

The original Child's Play has been my worst nightmare from the first time it aired on VHS. I actually remember watching it with my mom and I couldn't tell you who was more scared me or her.

Kids of today might not understand the real horror behind Chucky, after all in the 80s the must have toys were things like Cabbage Patch dolls, My Buddy, and Teddy Ruxpin to name a few. All seem harmless and cute, but with the introduction of Chucky my world and my toy box came tumbling down in an era of uncertainty. My dreams of a My Buddy doll stoped abruptly after my first viewing of Child's Play, who featured Chucky as the non dying, evil, possessed doll who creepily looked somewhat similar. Actually I lost my appetite for dolls for a long time after my first Chucky encounter.

Child's Play, the original release, was in my opinion the best and the most important one of the series of movies. Though I've seen them all none of them gave me the creeps as much as the first. Child's Play's special effects were awesome for the day and though I still think they are pretty awesome they seem a bit lacking compared to some of the cool new computer generated effects of today. I will be honest with you though, I just don't think Chucky would be scary if rendered in cgi. There is something so real.. so tangible.. about his actual puppet. I mean he is after all, a real glorified toy and that offers a whole new realistic twist of its own.

There is a new special feature that actually has commentary from Chucky himself and though I think that's pretty cool I'll be honest with you I can't bring myself to watch it.. its bad enough that I think I'll be up all night.. again. heh.

Thanks MGM for scaring the crap out of me.. yet again.

Every little girl's dream.

When I think of Ballet Shoes I think of my cousins pink slippers that are sitting in her "room" at my grandmother's house. Mind you we both have our own "rooms" at my grandmother's house but my cousin got to spend much more time there as a little girl so you see many more mementos of her childhood at my grandmother's including her pink ballet slippers that are in her room. I had dreams of dancing in ballet when I was a little girl but sadly I found out after a few lessons that dancing is not my strong suit. heh.

The movie Ballet Shoes is totally unforgettable. I'm not sure why I never saw this movie up till now. Staring Emma Watson (famed for her role in Harry Potter) its really just the perfect movie for a mother/daughter night or just for the little girl in all of us. I think every little girl has dreamed of being a dancer at some point in their lives even if you don't admit it and resign yourself to just dancing when no one is looking.

The tale starts with three orphans, who all dream of being someone, are brought together through an adoption to Professor who seems oddly absence. They vow to make something of themselves but the just don't know how. When they get a chance to enroll in the Children's Academy of Dancing and Stage Training they at last get their chance.

Based on a children book of the same name, you may already be familiar. They actually made reference to the series of books by Meg Ryan's character in You've Got Mail. Ballet Shoes deserves to be on every little girl's DVD shelf along side many of my other favorites such as Secret Garden and my own personal childhood favorite the Worst Witch. I actually feel a little guilty that I don't have a little girl of my own to share it with. Ahh well I guess Ill have to store it with the rest of my girlie movies in hopes that one day I will be having a mother/daughter night of my very own watching just this movie.

In the meantime you can go and pick up your own copy of Ballet Shoes at Amazon!

One of the best forgotten shows from the 80s!

I had almost forgotten about Shelly Duvall's Faerie Tale Theater. Though I honestly have no idea how I could forget, it was one of the most awesome TV series ever made in my opinion. I'm not sure how Shelley convinced these huge stars to come on and make Faerie Tale episodes in the first place but what happened in the 26 episode series is pure magic.

If you've never seen Shelly Duvall's Faerie Tale Theater just try to imagine Robin Williams as the Frog in the Frog Prince (no not as the price... as the frog) or Carrie Fisher as Thumbalina. The entire series is filmed on these amazingly gorgeous old school theater sets something as you would imagine to see in a really great children's theater but on a much bigger beautiful scale. There are no CGI or the type of special affects you would expect to see these days so in a way the stories have a life all their own, not something you would see often these days as fantasy sets are soo expensive to create not to mention the amount of detail needed. The costumes used are no exception as well it reminds me a bit of the early Jim Henson work.

I had almost forgotten about the series all together until I saw the release date set. Then it dawned on me, my very first love affair with Tim Burton started with Beetlejuice and Faerie Tale Theater. He directed one of the episodes, Aladdin, and let me just tell you up front its nothing at all like the Disney version. Actually as a kid it scared the crap out of me and mesmerized me all at once. I honestly cant even begin to believe I forgot about it if your a Burton fan its worth every penny to buy the set just for that episode. You can see so much of his later work in just that one piece.

Its a great series if your just reliving it or if you have never seen it. I will note though some of the episodes may be a bit too much for young children. Though kids will love it it has a bit of adult humor in it here and there and some of the scenes in some of the darker fairy tales can get quite creepy.

Shelly Duvall's Faerie Tale Theater is available right now on Amazon!

My dirty little secret!

Ok, Ok, I always say I never watch TV. That's not entirely true, of course I watch movies obviously from as many of these things I review each month, but when its late at night and I can't sleep and I just need something to entertain me while I drift off I have a solid addiction to Comedy Central and their stand up comedian specials.

Yesh, If I had to pick a favorite comedian I'd be pretty well torn, I guess that depends on which decade your talking about. Lately I have been obsessed with Dave Attell, and sadly I know why. Ever since I got pregnant with Connor its been a pretty dry two years. Not that I was ever a drinker but sure its nice to be able to sit down and have a few drinks with friends and unwind. Once you hit the baby stage thats pretty hard to do. Dave Attell's jokes about drinking are not only hillarious but they make me feel a bit better about missing out.

The only problem with that is every time I want to see a comedian on Comedy Central it seems one is never on. heh.. go figure. Well I just found the perfect solution to my late night delimna and my current Dave Attell fix. Best of Comedy Central Presents II on DVD is everything you could ever want from a comedy show in one sleek little DVD package. From Dave Attell to Stephen Lynch who is always great for a good laugh and a little song to boot.

The Best of Comedy Central Presents II is available currently on Amazon and its worth every little pretty penny they are asking for it especially on those late nights when I had a rough day and I just want to relax, listen to some adult humor and not about diapers or what Connor attempted to say today, and just laugh.

I have three copies of Best of Comedy Central Presents II to give away to my readers!

My favorite movie of all time, no joke.

If you were to ask me any time day or night what my favorite movie of all time is, thats so easy, ask me my second favorite movie and I may give you six diffrent answers but the favorite always holds strong. I've had a long term love affair with Nightmare Before Christmas since days after its release. It's no secret that Tim Burtan is my personal hero when it comes to films but there is just nothing.. and I do mean NOTHING that even comes close to comparing Nightmare Before Christmas .

When the new collector's edition arrived you might have thought I had won the lottery the way I squealed with glee. It had me at "hello" when it comes to the new case with the great 3D rendition of Jack's face, almost glowing metallic swirls, and the fact that the DVD comes with its own digital copy which you can copy direction onto your computer to watch or to transfer to your mobile device the only real issue I have with it is that the activation code can only be used once and my concern is now that I have it on my hard drive what happens if my computer crashes or I accidentally delete it. It seems a bit fair if your paying for the collectors edition that you should only be able to download the movie once from the disc.

Past that this is thus far the best edition to the Nightmare Before Christmas dvd release I have seen, and yes I own them all, you might be curious why I would even want another copy of Nightmare Before Christmas as well its the same movie after all. Well honestly the real value to these new bigger and better collector editions is in the "extras" This particular set gives us an awesome mansion tour hosted by Jack, a new uncut version of the film Frankenweenie, a whole second movie in itself, and a film short Vincent both of which alone are worth the purchase of the DVD.

Seriously though if there has ever been a moment where I wanted a Blue-Ray DVD player more than anything its right now. I would LOVE to see this set on Blue-Ray. *grumble*.

Nightmare Before Christmas the 2 Disc Collectors Edition is available right now on Amazon!

Two incredibly lucky readers will win their very own Nightmare Before Christmas the 2 Disc Collectors Edition!

Smart People is brilliant!!

I've spent enough time up close and personal with miserable old professors who have nothing better to do than to make their student's lives miserable for their own amusement to be drawn in initially to Smart People as it appears to be just a movie about a cranky professor. I can't help myself, you know as much as I hate professors like that, there is something just kinda sexy about the whole worldly wise professor thing. Whatever you do though, please don't even remotely mention this to my current professors as I know they are lurking out there, and no.. I'm not talking about any of you. ahem. (Will this affect my grade?)

Smart People is so much more than I ever expected and its downright hillarious, Dennis Quaid plays a professor named Lawrence Wetherhold, who is as miserable as his name sounds. A widower with a teenage daughter who is just as miserable as he is. Things start to change when Lawerance's freeloading adopted brother shows up to help take care of him after an illness which leaves him unable to drive. In the end though the brother ends up as being the one little thing that the family needs to really mix things up and get life going again. To top it off Sarah Jessica Parker shows up as a love interest that will make you smile. It's kind of a mix of an awkward comedy, romance, and indy flick all rolled into one yummy package.

Here is the official news :

Despite their high IQ’s, the Wetherhold family has a lot to learn in the critically acclaimed SMART PEOPLE. This Sundance Festival favorite stars Dennis Quaid as Professor Lawrence Wetherhold, a curmudgeonly tenured professor. Ellen Page plays his sarcastic and studious daughter. Sarah Jessica Parker is Wetherhold’s former student and love interest; and Thomas Hayden Church plays his “less academic” estranged brother. From the producer of Sideways SMART PEOPLE comes to DVD on August 12th. Bonus features include interviews with the cast, producers, and crew; writer and director audio commentaries; deleted scenes; and exclusive footage from the film’s premiere at the 2008 Sundance Festival.

Smart People is available on DVD starting today and its worth every penny. You can pick up your copy on Amazon!

I've been dying to see this one!

I was a HUGE fan of Six Feet Under and I actually jumped with joy with the release of the first season of Dexter as Michael Hall, the star of Dexter and part of the core cast of Six Feet Under, was one of my favorite cast members in Six Feet Under. For those of you like myself who missed the first season, the second season will send you rushing out to get the first season as well. Dexter is a "blood spatter" expert for the Miami police department and ironically his "job" is to find killers when behind closed doors he is a serial killer himself.

The only real issue with the second season is unlike season one it seems to be more reliant on "fluff" instead of going into as much background on Dexter and his story. I'm not sure if this had something to do with the writers strike, but it just seemed a bit rushed. Overall though its an excellent show and if the first season had not been so amazing I would have nothing bad to say about the second season. I actually watched the second season first and then went and rented the first, and honestly I loved the second season until I realized how awesome the first season was... heh.

Overall its a great series and I cannot wait to see season three, sadly I think I'll have to wait till it comes out on DVD as my schedule is full this semester.. ahh well thank goodness for DVDs eh?

Now for the official info :

DEXTER is a crime drama about Dexter Morgan, a man who leads a double life as an incredibly likeable forensics expert for the Miami Police Department and as an emotionless vigilante serial killer. Taught by his foster father to harness his lust for blood and killing, Dexter lives by his own strict moral code - he only kills murderers who can't otherwise be brought to justice. Dexter is a killer who grapples with fitting into society while, at the same time, he struggles with his inability to feel emotion. The irony of Dexter's life is that he works closely as a blood splatter analyst with the very people who hunt his kind - the homicide department. Dexter's "Regular Joe" front is in full force while working alongside the ill-tempered Sgt. James Doakes, who seems to be the only one to sense Dexter's more sinister side, and Lt. Maria LaGuerta, the head of the division who pursues Dexter sexually with as much force as she would any criminal. While his sister, Debra Morgan, a tough and determined cop, leans on Dexter for personal advice and career advancement, the closest one Dexter "connects" with is Det. Angel Batista whose similar attention to detail and taste for forensics almost mirrors his own. While sentiment and feelings elude Dexter, he struggles to find a kindred spirit of sorts in his emotionally damaged girlfriend, Rita, who keeps him grounded in the realities of "normal" life and provides him respite from the dark corners of his mind. The series is based on the acclaimed novel, "Darkly Dreaming Dexter," by Jeff Lindsay

Dexter - The Complete Second Season will be available on DVD starting August 19th. You can go preorder your copy right now on Amazon!

Ready for some scandal!?

Who knew the 18th century was so full of drama, infidelity, intense competition between a father and son, and heartbreak, you would think it was almost a current day mini drama but no this is the story of The Strauss Family and their legacy.

Many of you I am sure have heard of Johann Strauss or at least have heard his amazingly beautiful Waltz's but did you know that he is actually Johann Strauss Jr and his father Johann Strauss Sr was almost equally as talented. This by the way is incredibly confusing if you decide to take a Classical music class in college, which I wish I would have watched this series before starting this last semester it would have saved me a lot of trouble!

The DVD follows the life of Johann Strauss Sr and Johann Strauss Jr, their struggles, issues with infidelity, failed marriages, children, and illnesses. You listen to their beautiful music and I think so few of us really think about the people that wrote the music or what inspired them. This series on DVD really gives you a good look into their lives and struggles.

I promise even if you hate classical music you will really find their lives incredibly interesting. Just consider it a bit of "sex in the 1800s" heh.. ok that was a terrible analogy, but really nothing much has changed from then till now when it comes to the complexity of adult relationships. Though I will tell you now if a guy ever decides to leave me for a woman 28 years younger than him I will make his life miserable.

The Strauss Family is available on DVD at Amazon!

Drillbit Taylor, a welcomed vacation from chores! heh.

Ever get picked on when you were in school? Ever have a brilliant idea that maybe you could just pay someone to beat up the bullies for you? Though I don't necessarily think that this is the right option lol watching Drillbit Taylor totally cracked me up.

What do you get when you mix one awall homeless solider, three pretty geeky freshmen, a particularly mean bully, and scenes of Owen Wilson showering naked on the beach (don't worry its only his butt.. heh)... an actually surprisingly funny movie.

Though I realize that some of the other reviewers gave Drillbit Taylor so-so ratings and though I have to say its not necessarily the funniest movie I've ever seen with Owen Wilson it's certainly a nice comical vacation from mommydom. I think being a mom makes it even funnier as you watch how terribly clueless the parents in Drillbit Taylor are, and hope and pray you don't end up just like them. And though I would not consider this movie child friendly it would be ok for most teens over 13 if you don't mind them seeing naked tush.

Here's for the official description :

Ryan (Troy Gentile), Wade (Nate Hartley) and Emmit (David Dorfman) attend their first day at high school and they’re pumped…until they meet up with Filkins (Alex Frost), a school bully who comes off like a little Hannibal Lecter. Before they become completely engulfed in Filkins’ reign of terror, they seek out some protection by placing an ad in Soldier of Fortune magazine. Their best response – and the cheapest – comes from Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), a down-on-his luck soldier of fortune who lives a homeless – he likes to say “home-free” – existence on the beach. He enrolls them in some physical and mental training.

I have two copies of Drillbit Taylor to give away to my readers!

Just when you thought it was safe to go on vacation...

I've seen movies about sharks killing swimmers, little crazy things that come out of the toilet (I can't even remember what movie that was.. but it freaked me out), killer bugs, and even big monsters that come out of the ocean... but honestly up till now I have never seen a movie about killer plants that was scary enough to really count, Little Shop of Horrors is great but certainly not scary.

The Ruins follows a group of young tourists head off to explore some Mayan Ruins on their vacation. Though there are lots of "signs" that tell them that this is possibly not the best idea they have ever come up with they find themselves stuck in the Ruins with what appears to be people out to get them, and a bunch of angry villagers that do not want them to just walk out of there. Not to spoil your fun, but I honestly will never look at the vines that grow along my fence the same way ever again.

Though it is supposed to be a horror movie I would consider most of the horror in the gore factor instead of a fright flick. There are a lot of gory scenes and one of which that involves them hacking off the legs of one of the group ranks up there almost with "Saw" type gore. If anything it will leave you gripping the closest pillow wishing that they would just stop. For a summer release on a horror flick its absolutely a must see!

The Ruins is available right now on DVD at Amazon!

I have two copies of The Ruins to giveaway to my readers!

Step Up 2 - The Streets

Ok.. I know what your thinking.. or at least I know what I was thinking. Oh no.. not another one of those immature dance movies with no plot.

Well I have to say I am way more surprised than you are that I actually LOVED Step Up 2 : The Streets. I'm not even kidding seriously I ended the movie wanting to watch it again. Now, I admit.. the plot was short and the main focus of the movie is the dancing, but who can blame them seriously those kids are talented. If I had abs even remotely like the main actress did, um yeh.. ok I'd show them off too. Then again I have never had abs like that no matter who skinny I get so I can just keep dreaming.

Seriously though the plot was actually substantial enough to keep me watching though a bit based for teenagers, but there is one character in the movie that is just so freaking adorable (in a geeky goofy kinda cute sorta way) that makes the entire movie as far as I am concerned. The first scene where Moose shows off his dancing skills is in my opinion worth the rental fee at your local movie rental place, not to mention the amazing dance sequence at the end of the movie. The entire thing reminds me a bit of this tiny guy who used to dance at these computer conferences I used to go to when I was younger and cooler. Every time he would dance I would end up dropping everything I was doing to just stare at him blankly like a purple glowing cow had just entered the room.

Mmm.. I think Ill go watch it again, seriously. I guess I am just shocked as I really thought I would hate it, its not so often you guys get to see me so tongue tied for words.

In the meantime here is some more info on the movie :

When a street savvy girl with untrained talent teams up with a virtuoso modern dancer to compete in an underground dance-off, sparks fly both on and off the dance floor! Street kid Andie (Briana Evigan) wins a slot at the elite Maryland School of the Arts, but finds herself fighting to fit in with her privileged classmates while also trying to hold onto her old life. But when she joins forces with the school’s hottest dancer, Chase (Robert Hoffman), to form a crew of fellow academy outcasts to compete in Baltimore’s underground dance battle, The Streets, she ultimately finds a way to live her dream while building a bridge between her two separate worlds.

Anyone for a road trip?

I sadly missed that right of passage visiting colleges, living in a dorm, partying. I decided to do things in the opposite order.. get married.. do the corporate thing.. get a divorce.. start college.. have a baby.. and well the rest is still a surprise even to me.

Though I hate to admit if I had gone on College scouting trips I'd guess that my dad would have been just as picky and strict as Martin Lawrence is in the film. Though I'd bet my dad would have never let me go off to a college either way not without a lot of tears, screaming, and possibly some blackmail involved. heh. I never really gave him a choice on the marriage thing and believe me that didn't go over that well either. I love you dad. Strangely he does always know best..

Here is the official press release :

Burbank, Calif. May 2, 2008—Choosing a college can be one of the most exciting times in a high school student’s life—unless her overzealous dad decides to take the wheel for her college road trip. A hilarious and heartwarming family comedy starring Disney Channel’s Raven-Symoné and Martin Lawrence, College Road Trip comes to Disney DVD and Blu-ray™ Hi-Def with a trunk full of fantastic bonus features on July 15, 2008 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

A rollicking family road movie brimming with inspired silliness, College Road Trip tells the story of a noholds-barred battle for independence between a loving but protective father and his teenage daughter. Disney Channel favorite Raven-Symoné (TV’s “That’s So Raven,” “Cheetah Girls”) stars as Melanie Porter, an overachieving high school student with her heart set on attending Washington D.C.’s Georgetown University. Martin Lawrence (Wild Hogs) turns in an uproarious comic performance as the overbearing dad who wants her to stay closer to their Chicago home—and will do whatever it takes to keep her there!

The film’s charismatic cast also includes Disney Channel star Brenda Song (“The Suite Life of Zack and Cody”) and Lucas Grabeel (High School Musical). Plus Donny Osmond, Kym E. Whitley and Albert, the most talented pet pig in Hollywood.

A laugh-filled delight for parents and kids alike, College Road Trip is the “Best family comedy of the year!" according to Roseann Rogers of KPRC-TV (NBC) in Houston. Sandie Newton of KTVT-TV (CBS) in Dallas calls it “…an irresistible family film that will have all generations laughing ‘til they cry!” and goes on to call Martin Lawrence and Raven-Symoné “a dream comedy team!”

I'll be honest personally I was not a huge fan of the movie, but its perfect for the preteen set who I think would find the humor actually funny. Its a bit immature for my tastes.

College Road Trip is available on Amazon starting July 15th!
